1. After listening to the talk, are you able to explain in Singapore's context, what it means to achieve "sustainable development"?
In Singapore's context, sustainable development refers to developing Singapore in such a way that it becomes efficient, clean and green. Being efficient would be to manage resources carefully, so we do not waste our limited resources, allowing the resources to be left for future use. One of Singapore's guiding principles is "anticipating change and staying relevant". Hence, Singapore developed NEWater to ensure that we have sufficient clean water for the future, enabling us to be self-reliant and not be dependent on Malaysia for water. Singapore also works towards being clean and green, for example, the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve preserves our natural greenery, enabling sustainable development. Therefore, by ensuring that we are self-reliant and play a part in conservation, we have achieved sustainable development.
